As the Isabela State University bus climbed in the mountainous area of Ifugao at around three in the afternoon, a hard and roaring rain poured in, spraying on the vehicle windshield causing all the smog and smoke vanished from the sight of the university team.
Eventually, a bracing body of water gushed from different parts of the mountains washing off the muddy street of Banaue. After a while, the team entered in a narrow gate which surprisingly fit for the university bus. It noticed a number of teenagers in their wet school uniform, wearing sludgy slippers, carrying plastic bags containing actor-covered notebooks.
Suddenly, an almost retired man waved his hand and waited for the team to get off the bus. It was the Banaue National Highschool principal who welcomed the grouped.
The team started to roam around the woody campus. The school buildings are almost dilapidated because they lack paint maintenance. The principal explained that they seldom re-paint due to budget constraint, besides; the place is dusty causing the buildings to immediately look old.
The team encountered a student, Juan dela Cruz and learned a story. He would just religiously help his parents who are tenants working in the terraces. He desperately thought he would grow uneducated. When his parents told him to enroll, he even grabbed his mother’s waist and tearfully thanked her.
Now, Juan’s reason to be happy is added when the university team broke the news that the Banaue National High School is a qualified recipient of the 2007 iSchool Project funded by the Commission on Institute of Communication Technology (CICT). Juan’s high school will be provided computers for its enhancement on the latest technology trends for better education.
Regardless of a mountainous or far-flung area, Banaue which once called the "Eighth Wonder of the World" because of its picturesque and historical the Banaue Rice Terraces, Juan’s future will be as towering as the peak of the mountain.
